Webber for Renault in 2008?

I noticed last year that, when Mark Webber signed for Red Bull Racing, there was no announcement as to the length of the deal.

Speculation arose in the Paddock of the Monaco Grand Prix over the weekend, suggesting that our Mark could be headed to Renault for 2008 (he was a Renault test driver prior to getting a race seat at Minardi).

This would not surprise me at all. Reasons:
* Mark is managed by Flavio Briatore, Team Principal at Renault F1.
* Renault’s 2007 rookie recruit Heikki Kovalainen has not covered himself with glory – the contrast between Kovalainen and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton is stark.
* Renault’s Giancarlo Fisichella signed a one-year deal for 2007.
* Mark is well regarded by Pat Symonds, Renault’s Technical Director.

Although I didn’t publish my prediction here, I did post the following on the Overclockers Australia forum in October last year:

Put your hats on boys and predict the Renault drivers in 2008.

My bet: Webber and Kovalainen.

(And I reckon that Webber was unlucky not to be heading there in 2007. As I said elsewhere, I feel that Flav signed Fisi early just to be sure he had SOME continuity in the squad, and that at the time he expected that Williams would take up the option on Webber. My hypothesis is that if Flav had known that Webber would be available, he would have taken Webber into Renault rather than re-signing Fisi.)

I think.

I may well be wrong about Kovalainen – but I may well be right about Webber!

    He has signed a two yuear deal with Red bull so I don’t see him in a factory Renault next year. Mark’s signing was more significant in Red Bull getting Renault engines for RBR me thinks

    And where is Webber this year? We haven’t seen much of him at all. Kovalainen has performed better than Webber so far. We’ll see what the rest of the circuit will bring. My bet is against Webber, judging by his performance so far.
