Nerd goes to the movies: The Life Aquatic

At Chez Nerd, we have just subscribed to the new BigPond Movies “4 DVDs for $9.95 a month” plan. Our local video hire shop charges $7.60 for any new or recent release, so the BigPond deal seems pretty good to a penny-pinching Nerd.

Our first DVD on the plan was The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

The is not a movie for everybody. In fact, I struggled to name people of my acquaintance who might enjoy it.

Starring Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett, The Life Aquatic is a spoof on all the Jacques Cousteau documentaries we watched as children. It’s a subtle, gentle, off-beat movie that traces the making of Steve Zissou’s (Bill Murray) last film — a documentary that sees Team Zissou and the good ship Belafonte in pursuit of the terrible Jaguar Shark.

While there are moments of high drama, the pace of the film is mostly slow and lingering. The characters are given time and space to evolve as the story unfolds. Zissou, in particular, is delicately drawn, and maintains his downbeat, downtrodden outlook throughout.

If you’re looking for action and adventure, look elsewhere. If an intelligent, engrossing, meandering and wry spoof is more your thing, why not give this a go?
